Convenience store chain 7-Eleven Inc. said Wednesday that total August sales rose 7.2 percent to $1.09 billion from $1.02 billion last year.
Total merchandise sales for August were $719.6 million, an increase of 2.6 percent over the August 2003 total of $701.7 million. U.S. same-store merchandise sales rose 2.1 percent during the month. Gasoline sales rose 17.4 percent in August to $373.4 million from $318 million in the prior-year period.
The company said August sales were lower than the year-to-date trend because of bad weather conditions in many parts of the country, including hurricanes in the Southeast. 7-Eleven also said a later Labor Day holiday resulted in lower sales in August and higher sales comparisons in September.
Year-to-date, 7-Eleven said U.S. same-store merchandise sales increased 5.6 percent, and total merchandise sales rose 6.3 percent to $5.28 billion.
Looking ahead, the company expects September same-store sales to grow in the 4 percent to 6 percent range, and reiterated guidance of 90 cents to 94 cents per share for 2004 earnings, excluding items.
Shares of 7-Eleven closed Tuesday at $19.84 on the New York Stock Exchange.
